Janelle O’Neil, Director of Human Resources at Skuid, wanted one system that did everything. But in the software world, getting everything you want in a business application can be a challenge. Out-of-the-box functionality often doesn’t meet the unique needs of individuals, teams, and departments.
Customizing enterprise software, meanwhile, takes a lot of time, money, and code. That’s why Janelle and her team decided to use their own product, Skuid, to build the application they really wanted. Learn why it works for our HR team:
Build an app that can scale and flex.
At first, Janelle considered other options to build the HR app. But she ran into obstacles. None of the solutions she researched, even the more costly, robust applications, provided all the functionality the department needed out-of-the-box. In a high-growth company, there wasn’t time for time-consuming development cycles, especially when needs can change on a dime.
“The main thing for us, the reason why we built it instead of purchasing it, was that we wanted to change the system to fit whatever process we need,” Janelle says. With Skuid, Janelle is able to do just that, and the app scales with the company.
As Skuid grows, the needs of HR change. They need to access different views in the app, pull new reports, and add and rename fields, just to name a few things.
Just imagine the perfect system for you and all the different things you have to track, the reports that you need, the way that you want to view your employees and your applicants, and the different dashboards for the different users. You can just create whatever it is you need.
Janelle O'Neil, Director of Human Resources
When it comes to open enrollment and reporting, Janelle says the Skuid HR app is powerful. Instead of having to build out custom reports for each company who needs one (all formatted differently, of course) in Excel, or waiting for IT to create reports for you, the Skuid HR team can export the report easily, directly from the app.
“One great example is that we now have to do EEO-1 reporting. We didn't have to do in the past,” Janelle says. “All we have to do to adapt to that new requirement is to go add that field in the HR app and send out a survey, and now we can pull the report.”
To get the changes that Janelle needed in the HR app, she didn’t have to wait in line for IT to customize the application. Instead, she worked with an intern, Elena Hatch, Assistant Internal Solutions Engineer. Because of the Skuid platform’s low barrier to entry when building an app (no code required), Elena was able to quickly learn Skuid and make sophisticated adjustments to the app on the fly.
“I'm a college student, so I work 15 hours a week,” Elena says. “But it's easy enough that I can change things really quickly. It doesn't take forever to change a name on a field or change the way something looks. It's really, really easy.”
Get seamless integration between systems.
In addition to building an HR app that matched the HR department’s shifting processes and needs, Janelle and her team wanted to integrate human capital management (HCM) and applicant tracking software (ATS) within a single app.

“You can buy an expensive system that does all of this, but with Skuid you get the flexibility to truly create whatever system you need, and change it immediately,” Janelle says.
Because Skuid connects to multiple different systems and data sources through its pre-built integrations, Janelle and her team were able to create an app that not only integrated HCM and ATS functionality, they were able to make the two systems interact exactly the way they wanted.
They can automatically convert data from the ATS into employee records in the HCM system with the click of a button. They can build in automated emails and processes to match their unique needs.
The app can also connect via API to other important systems, like Docusign (to streamline the process for job offers and changes), and ADP payroll services.
This makes it possible for the HR team to perform all of their necessary functions in-house, within the same app.Additionally, the Skuid HR team can easily create custom dashboards for different users, for everyone from the CEO, to the director of HR, to the standard employee.
Dashboards are broken down according to the information the user needs to see, whether that’s employee location, applicant status, department, or any number of fields. The data displayed can be as granular, or as broad, as the user needs, because of all the different data sources you can incorporate.
“Just imagine the perfect system for you and all the different things you have to track, the reports that you need, the way that you want to view your employees and your applicants, and the different dashboards for the different users,” Janelle says. “You can just create whatever it is you need.” Ready to see what you can create?
